My Favorite Web Sites - Winchester Star - 8/16/01
 by Martin Zombeck

This is a bi-weekly column providing an annotated list of Web sites that may be of interest to the community. Each column will list sites that belong to a particular category: search engines, art, online newspapers and magazines, health and medicine, history, business and economics, etc. or sites relevant to a particular season, for example, skiing or gardening. Most sites will be non-commercial. To make it easier to access the sites, each bi-weekly column will be posted on the Town of Winchester's Web site so that the sites can be accessed and bookmarked without having to be typed. Previous columns will be archived at the Winchester site, also.

This column compiling transportation Web sites should have something for everyone and will help you get in, around, and out of the Boston area by any means necessary. You can even watch current traffic jams from the convenience of your own home.

Winchester Center Commuter Station
This MBTA site provides parking information, location map, fare, schedule, and connecting bus schedules for the Winchester center commuter station.

MBTA Main Page
Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority's home page.

MBTA Commuter Rail Service
Schedules, maps, and fares for the complete network.

MBTA Subway Service
Schedules, maps, and fares for the complete network.

MBTA Bus Service
Schedules, maps, and fares for the complete network. You can obtain Route 350 and Route 134 bus schedules and maps here.

Commuter and Excursion Boat Services
The site provides a map of all the boat routes and links you to the Web pages of the providers of the services. I found that several of the linked sites crashed my Netscape Navigator but not Internet Explorer. Chalk one up for Bill Gates!

MassBike Online
Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition Web site. Learn about all existing and proposed bikeways in Massachusetts. You can obtain a map of the Minuteman Bikeway (pdf format).

State & Federal Transportation Sites
Links to the following Web sites: The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority (Turnpike), SmarTraveler (provides real time traffic information in 83 U.S. cities), The Central Artery/Ted Williams Tunnel (The BIG Dig), U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), The Boston Metropolitan Planning Organization, Other State's DOTs, Caravan (Massachusetts' private, nonprofit commuter service company), and more.

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport)
Logan Airport Web site - real-time airport traffic, directions to the airport, weather conditions, parking, flight information (arrivals, departures, flight tracking), links to airline Web sites, airport services (restaurants, duty free, shops, etc.), airport maps, individual terminal information, US customs link, and more. If you start looking at this marvelous site, you might miss your flight.

Woburn Logan Express
An alternative to driving to the airport. The site provides a location map, parking and bus fees, and a schedule. Buses stop at all Logan terminals. Travel time is 30-45 minutes. Be sure to allow ample time during rush hours.

The Web site proffers much but fails to deliver. You should be able to obtain schedules, fares, and book a trip at this site. I failed in a solitary experiment, receiving this message "We're sorry, our booking system was temporarily unable to complete your request. Please try again now or call 1-800-USA-RAIL for schedules, fares, or reservations. We apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you." Sound familiar?

Current Traffic Conditions
Real time road conditions; for the masochists - live traffic video for Storrow and Memorial Drive, Tobin Bridge, Route 93, and other major roadways.

My favorite. Enter the street address and town and obtain a street map with the location marked on it. Detailed driving directions to and from the location are also provided.

Not as full-featured as Mapquest but provides maps of foreign cities.

The next column will feature local, state, and federal government sites. Previous columns with live links can be found at
