The tournament followed a Compass Draw format for both the men's and ladies' events. Each team in the tournament played at least four times and moved around the compass depending on their winning or losing a match. The beauty of this format that as you go deeper into the draw the matches become more and more competitive.
After two days of sun-drenched tennis, the undefeated team of Abbie Culhane and Judi Nicholson
captured the main flight East division for the Ladies' Cup, with a determined win over two very talented players, Juliana Smith and Stacie O'Rourke, 7-6, 6-7, 6-1. It was a wonderful, hard fought final enjoyed by all. On the men's side, the team of Neil Hurley and Gordon Nicholson prevailed over Chris Aronson and Leo Lauretano 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in another hotly contested match. The difference in the match was Hurley's consistent, hard driving, forehand return of serve that enabled his partner to poach for timely put-aways. Once again, the old adage for doubles was proven. "He who controls the net - Wins!

The Tennis Tournament is the principle fund-raiser of the Winchester GoodStart Program at Winchester Hospital. GoodStart is MSPCC's nationally recognized program, to promote safe healthy families and
prevent child abuse and neglect through education, counseling and family support services.
The GoodStart Program at Winchester Hospital was made possible through an extraordinary local
fund-raising effort that provided the seed money to support the center. Thanks to the determination
and unwavering efforts of Suzie Reno the GoodStart Program opened at the Winchester Hospital in 1995. Since the program opened at the Winchester site, 48 families from eight local communities have participated in the program.
This year's tournament was an enormous success in terms of raising money for The GoodStart program at Winchester Hospital, and also as a way of bringing many people together to take part in a fun event. Without the extraordinary effort of the many volunteers, and the generous contributions in term of goods, services and financial support this tournament could never be the success it was. - Winchester Star, July 3, 1997.
