The Winchester Tennis Association held its 68th Annual Fall Classic
on Sept. 6-7 and 13-14. Once again
this tournament was a success and
the players enjoyed beautiful
weather over the four days of tennis.
In the men's singles (photo 2)
Glenn Ciotti (right) won his
second straight title defeating Gavin Barton (left) by a 7-6, 7-4,
6-1 score in a rematch of last year's
finals. In the men's doubles final (photo 6)
Barton (2nd from left) and Chris Aronson (2nd from right) beat
Neil Hurley (right) and Dudley Blodgett (left) in a
fiercely contested match 4-6, 6-1
6-4.
On the women's side of the draw
(photo 1), Debbie Simpson
(right) defeated the defending Women's Singles Champion, Prudy
Horne (left) 6-1, 6-2. Simpson (photo 3, right) then
teamed up with Ellen Wilson (2nd from right) in the
Women's doubles final beating
Katherine Dunn (2nd from left) and Penny
Pounder (left) 7-5, 6-1. In mixed doubles
final (photo 4) Pounder (2nd from left and her husband Niels Rathlev (left) defeated the team of Mark
Herlihy (right) and Prudy Horne (2nd from right) by
a 6-1, 6-3 score.
In the Senior division - which
expands every year - Neil Hurley
(photo 5, right) won
his fifth straight Senior Singles title
beating Leo Lauretano (left) 6-2, 6-
1. Hurley is closing in on the title
record. He is now three titles away
from Ron Salter's record of eight
consecutive senior singles titles.
Salter teamed up with Blodgett to
win the Senior Men's Doubles title
beating Lauretano and Phil Coonley 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Onnce again, the Winchester Tennis Association thanks Vin Palumbo, Bob Collins and Don Ellis for
their help with court assignments
and in keeping the courts in such
great shape.
